Father of the internet: 'web is running out of addresses'

The internet is running out of open internet protocols. Each computer or internet enabled device has an internet protocol that consists of 32 digits in binary code. That means there are about 4.2 billion addresses for computers to use. This is all part of the original internet system called IPv4 which was created in the early 1970’s. This limits the number of devices you can connect to the internet to 4.2 billion. As the number of internet devices has grown we are running out of vacant addresses. Today only 14% of addresses are open and experts say they will run out sometime in 2010. There is a new internet system that has been developed to help solve this problem called IPv6. This system involves 120 digits of binary code and that allows for 340 trillion, trillion different internet addresses. This system has been developed for about 10 years and needs to be implemented soon or some users will not be able to gain access to the internet. To transition to this new system consumers will have to get new routers that are compatible with IPv6 and some old computers will not be able to read the technology. The transition period should be smooth with little effects on consumers but it needs to start taking place now so it can be implemented slowly and properly. This is a very important issue because we use the internet everyday in so many different ways. If the internet was to disappear it would severely cripple society as we know it. We need to keep up to date on new technology and make sure that we have the hardware necessary for these changes to work properly.

New York Times Revenue Falls 14% As Internet Migration Takes its Toll

The New York Times ad revenue fell for the month of August, this year alone its ad revenue has fallen 14%. This decline in revenue is blamed on the expansion of internet based news web sites that allow users to view news articles online for free. The media giant’s online sales have increased steadily over the past few years and have made substantial profits. Its online revenue has risen 10% since last August. Classified ads and help wanted ads have fallen the most in the written publication. This has been attributed to the sluggish economy along with the push for news on the internet. August was actually a rather good month for the Times, this increase in reader interest was attributed to the Olympics and financial shocks that have happened in the past month. This has made people more interested in the recent news and has increased sales. I think that the print news industry is a dying medium. The news companies need to find ways to make money on the internet or they will go out of business soon. Many people today do not bother reading the news paper and rely solely on internet sources for daily updates on the happenings throughout the world. Companies can do this by selling ads on web sites that will create revenue while people read the material for free. Another way to make money on the internet is to charge a subscription fee for news articles. This might seem like a better solution, but people will be reluctant to pay for online news when they can get it for free.

These sources sometimes do not provide the most accurate information because they can be peer reviewed data and are not necessarily checked by any authority of professional. This is becoming a major problem in research today, students can’t find good information for papers. They do not know how to search for credible sources on the internet. Some colleges are providing classes to teach students how to use credible internet databases. These classes are being taut by librarians who understand the importance of finding reliable information when researching. Librarians’ at many schools offer classes or seminars on how to use the databases provided by the school and how to look up credible information on the internet. I think that this is a great use of library resources because in the future more and more information searching is going to be done on the internet. It is a skill that everyone needs to know so it is important that classes are offered to teach it. The development of some search engines such as Google scholar will help students find reliable sources easier. Every day the process of finding information is becoming easier. So as schools teach these research techniques they need to be aware of the new technology and developments that are being released that can help students find information in the easiest ways. One day in the future it will not be a problem to find reliable sources because search engines will have developed ways to sort out the credible sources but until that day comes it is important for libraries to help students recognize what is good source.

The Future of Libraries Beginning the Great Transformation

Libraries have been used in the past for the storage of archives and the spread of information. Today it is so easy to find information via the internet that this is becoming a less important task for libraries. They will always be needed to keep track of documents and other historical artifacts. In the future this might become one of the libraries main tasks. They will also need to focus on the role of helping people sort information and find the specific information they are looking for. In our society information is so easy to obtain many people are having trouble finding the correct information they are looking for. Libraries can help people sort through this information and filter out the data that people want to read. This could be a good role for the new developing library. This new library should focus more of its resources on computers and online help and less on the traditional mediums of information, like books. I think that libraries need to expand computer areas and other services that will help costumers find information on the computer. This is the future of how people will find information. The use of books is becoming outdated. Although books will always be used in some extent, I think that libraries should focus less on shelving every book every written and more on providing computers that can look up the information found in these books. The future will hold many changes for libraries and if they can adapt to the changes of our culture to a more computer based society they will prove to be much more useful to the communities they serve.

Google polishes product line with Chrome browser

Google launched its new browser Chrome on Tuesday. This browser is designed to make navigating the internet easier and combined the search engine of Google with a new internet browser. This new browser includes a tool bar that allows you can enter web addresses as well as key words that will be searched through Google's database. Google hopes that this new browser will take some of the market share from Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Google is hoping that the new browser will become most peoples default browser in a few years. The browser has been under development for the past two years and is similar to Mozilla Firefox. Microsoft's Internet Explorer now holds about a 75% market share in the browser market with Firefox holding about 10%. Chrome is hoping to gain a large amount of this share in the near future and this will in turn allow more people to use the Google search engine. Google now holds a 63% market share with its search engine and they hope this new search engine will increase their share by drawing new users to their search engine with this browser. With this release Google's stock increased by $1.96 a share to $465.25. I think this new search engine is a good thing for consumers because anything that makes searching the internet easier will help save time and effort. This new search engine will combined the search engines of Google in a browser format and will allow Google to grow and gain new market share which will allow them to keep developing new technology.
